Mrs. Grossman does nice work

I took a couple of days off over the Christmas period and one of the things I did was clean up the junk drawer in my chest-of-drawers.  You know the junk drawer, filled to the brim with old photos, drained batteries, keys from houses you owned two houses ago.  Well in doing my clean up, I came upon a wonderful set of Mrs. Grossman’s colorful iguana stickers.  I looked at them more carefully and noticed that they were made in the U.S.  I was intrigued.

Turns out there is a real Mrs. Grossman.  Andrea Grossman is a graphic designer who has been in business for more than thirty years making stickers.  Mrs. Grossman studied at the prestigious Art Center of Design in Pasadena, California and launched Mrs. Grossman’s Paper Company from her home in 1975.

Mrs. Grossman’s initial foray into the sticker business began with an accident.  In 1979, a local paper store asked for a red heart sticker to decorate shopping bags for Valentine’s Day.  Not able to find such a sticker, Mrs. Grossman cut a heart out of black artist’s paper and sent it to a label printer, but soon forgot about it.

Three weeks later, a big carton arrived from the printer.  Her heart stickers had been mistakenly printed on rolls, rather than flat sheets.  Mrs. Grossman seized on the mistake and began selling the stickers by the yard.  A hit from the git go.  Mrs. Grossman created nine more sticker designs and introduced “Stickers by the Yard” at a trade show.  Soon Mrs. Grossman’s stickers had become one of the hottest-selling products in the country.

Mrs. Grossman still runs the firm that bears her name and oversees an 110,000-square-foot corporate headquarters in Petaluma California with 90 employees and the world’s only sticker factory tour.  Her website is very user-friendly with all sorts of sticker activities for adults and children

My favorite Mrs. Grossman stickers are:

Bugs, Barnyard animals and Halloween

Mrs. Grossman stickers are made by members of our extended American family in Petaluma California and are perfect as small gifts for children, party favors at children’s birthday parties or for letters and postcards.  I urge you to check out Mrs. Grossman’s website and pick up lots of Mrs. Grossman’s stickers.  I have decided to put Iguana stickers on all my cards this year; nothing shows you care like an Iguana.
