Man it’s bright out there!

I grew up in Los Angeles, and if you grow up there you learn the value of a good pair of sunglasses.  Wearing sunglasses is good for your eyes.  More sunglasses are sold in my hometown of Seattle than any other city in the County.  It is fairly sunny from July to September in Seattle, but outside that period, not so much.  As a result we often misplace our sunglasses and have to go and buy new ones.  Still, Seattle is fairly gorgeous when it is sunny.

Having lost my last pair of shades, I am in the market for a new pair, and of course they need to be made by members of our extended American family.  There are three firms making sunglasses in the U.S. that I can choose from.

American Optical

American Optical is the firm that makes the sunglasses our fighter pilots wear, so you can be sure they know a thing or two about protecting your eyes from glare.  AO, as they are known by those in the know, have been making sunglasses for the military since the Second World War.  In WWII, AO supplied the U.S. military with more than six million pairs of sunglasses.  Their classic model is iconic.

AO’s Original Pilot Sunglasses are available in a wide range of frames and lenses.  It screams cool.

Oakley was founded in 1975 by Jim Jannard.  According to Oakley, all of their sunglasses are made in their plant in Foothill Ranch in Southern California.  Oakley makes an enormous range of sunglasses and gives you the opportunity to customize lots of their models so that you can have a truly a one of a kind pair of shades.  My favorite model is the M FRAME® HYBRID® S.  I think just wearing a pair of Oakley M Frame® Hybrid® S will make me a better athlete.

Liquid Eyewear

Who can’t love a company that produces the signature shades for the Red Rocker Sammy Hagar?  Liquid Eyewear makes a pair of shades for Sammy that are not surprisingly called the Red Rocker Alien; they can be purchased from Sammy’s website.

While cool for Sammy, his shades are a bit flashy for my taste.  The Liquid Eyewear model that calls to me is the TFlex.

Regardless of whether you buy AO, Oakley or Liquid Eyewear shades, you will be getting a twofer.  You will get a great pair of sunglasses and your purchase will help provide employment for a member of our extended American family.   Not a bad return on a quick trip to the mall or the internet.  Now get shopping!
