I could have used one of those!

We just got back from a trip to the Oregon coast.  This photo shows Cannon Beach where we stayed.  In the distance, you can see Haystack Rock.

A trip to Cannon Beach always includes at least one beach fire, and this trip was no exception.  We got all our beach fire provisions: newspaper, wood, and matches.  Ben and I got the fire all set up but getting it lit was a bear.  Beaches tend to be windy and Cannon Beach was very windy the night before last.  After going through the entire book of matches, we finally got it lit.  But I was thinking to myself afterwards that before my next trip to the beach, I need to pick up a Zippo.

Zippo was born in Bradford, Pennsylvania in 1933.  George G. Blaisdell, the founder of Zippo, sold his first Zippo lighter with a rectangular case and hinged top for $ 1.95 each.  That Zippo lighter and every one produced since in Bradford comes with Mr. Blaisdell’s unconditional lifetime guarantee – “It works or we fix it free. ™”  The design of the Zippo lighter has not changed much since 1933 because Mr. Blisdell got it right from the get go.

During World War II, millions of American troops carried Zippos into battle.  After the war, Zippo lighters became an iconic commercial product.  Zippos have appeared in hundreds of movies and TV series; Donna Reed used a Zippo to light Montgomery Clift’s cigarette in From Here to Eternity.  You can have your Zippo customized with virtually anything on the side of it you want.

Zippo just produced its 500,000,000 lighter a couple of months ago.  In looking into Zippo, I also discovered a product made by members of our extended American family working at the Zippo plant in Bradford the would have come in handy for my beach fire.  The Zippo Emergency Fire Starter Kit seems a necessity for anyone going hiking, fishing or doing anything else outdoors.

So visit the Zippo website, order up your own custom Zippo lighter, and know that you will never again be at the mercy of a book of matches again!
