Sometimes finding products you want that are made by members of our extended American family can be a bit of a struggle. But thankfully, a lot of websites of well-known retailers are now including a “Made in America” search function that really helps you narrow down your search. Here are a sampling of some firms that have this feature on their websites.
William-Sonoma
I really like William-Sonoma’s “Made in the USA” search function. Once you are in that category, you can refine your search into categories. Some of my favorite U.S. products featured on the William-Sonoma site are the McLeod Coupe salad serving hands, hand-made since 1967 of sustainably harvested New England yellow birch by the John McLeod Ltd company from the fine state of Vermont.
Some other favorites of mine at the William-Sonoma site are the animal cutting board made by the J.K. Adams company, also of Vermont.
REI
The behemoth sporting goods company from my hometown has a nice “Made in America” search feature on their website. Particularly pleasing to me is REI’s decision to source some of their own branded clothing from the states. REI stocks lots of great U.S. made camping products from my favorite U.S. outdoor firm Cascade Designs, which just happens to make its stuff in my hometown. Like their MSR pumps
and their Therm-a-Rest mattresses.
Nordstrom
Yet another Seattle firm. Nordstrom stocks oodles of American made apparel and shoes and will be profiled in my upcoming book, Simply American, Putting Our Extended American Family Back To Work. I am fairly ancient so I don’t think I could pull off wearing an Obey “Death Trip” tank top, but my son Ben probably could.
However, I definitely would look good in my favorite suit in the world, the Hickey Freeman classic navy suit.
So the next time you need to find products made by members of our extended American family, let your fingers do the work. By utilizing the “Made in America” search option you will save time and will create jobs by assuring that your apparel, shoes, and other goods are made right here at home.
Now get shopping!
Great article. Many up to date internet sites will have a search where you can type in “Made in USA”. It makes searching much easier. By the way, that is one giant needle. Any time line on the upcoming book. -Jack A.
